Colin Phillips gave his ALFA debut describing his amazing encounter with Paulo Coelho at the Book fair and reading extracts from The Zahir.
Catrin George tried hard to provide the right drinks and snacks without making an unacceptable loss.
Reg Reynolds took the audience into the good old days of the early Eighties, when he coming from Canada arrived in Europe, i.e. Portimao to a complete different world.
Finally Barbara Fellgiebel explained the gender of certain items:
freezer bags are male – because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.
photocopiers are female – because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up.
tires are male – because they go bald easily and are often over inflated.
trains are definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.
remote controls are female, although you probably would have thought male. But consider this: they easily give a man pleasure, he’d be lost without one and – while he doesn’t always know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying…
Now what about hoovers, mobile phones and micro waves?
Do come up with a clever definition next time and win a book.
Talking of next time: The next ALFA-event is Tuesday, the 25th of November when we show TWO different films in the Auditório Municipal, the beautiful theatre in Lagoa:
first at 2.00 pm a documentary about BANG – Barbro Alving, the most interesting swedish female journalist (Swedish w Engl. subtitles). After the film, Catrin serves Coffee, tea and cakes.
At 7.30 pm we’ll show 4 minutes – an amazing film about two pianists that has been awarded with more than 40 film prizes.(German w Portuguese subtitles).

Join us for a X-mas edition with mulled wine and Lori Avocato, an American author I met at the Matera Sassi fiction festival and could convince to come from New England to ALFA. Give her the audience, she deserves.
